Today is a horrific day for our nation, our state, and for all of south Florida. I grew up a few miles from Parkland. I attended the neighboring high school and many of my friends attended Douglas. I know that campus from visiting for sporting events and drama competitions. My personal knowledge of the campus makes the images from yesterday of children running from the building, some with Valentines in their hands raised above their hands, even more disturbing.
Orlando and all of Central Florida has the unfortunate unique experience of knowing the pain and shock of a community devastated by gun violence. Yesterday's shooting could be a trigger for many here in Orlando. I urge you to seek help if needed. There are resources in our community that are ready to assist you.
In the coming days, I will be posting actionable tasks we as a community can take to assist victims as well as how we can affect change that will keep our community safe from gun violence. Until then, hug your loved ones a little tighter today and know that together we can bring about change.
